The International Commission on Illumination - also known as the CIE from its French title, the Commission Internationale de l´Eclairage - is devoted to worldwide cooperation and the exchange of information on all matters relating to the science and art of light and lighting, colour and vision, photobiology and image technology.
With strong technical, scientific and cultural foundations, the CIE is an independent, non-profit organization that serves member countries on a voluntary basis. Since its inception in 1913, the CIE has become a professional organization and has been accepted as representing the best authority on the subject and as such is recognized by ISO as an international standardization body.

On May 10th 2019, after a brief illness

PROF. NIKOLAY IVANOV VASSILEV

At the age of 89 years

We lost a remarkable scientist, one of the founders of the science of lighting in Bulgaria.
Prof. Nikolay Vassilev graduated from the State Polytechnic - Sofia, specialty Electrical Networks and Systems and specialized in Electric Power Supply and Lighting Equipment. His professional career started as a designer at Energoproekt - Sofia, with large-scale electric power supply systems for the new residential areas "Yavorov", "Iztok" and "Hipodruma" in Sofia. At the same time he was a part-time assistant at MEI-Sofia.
As a full-time assistant (1959), Associate Professor (1966) and Professor of Industrial Lighting (1969), he introduces the subjects of electrical and lighting equipment and develops these courses in the Department of Electrical Networks and Systems.
In 1981 Prof. Nikolay Vassilev founded at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electricity Supply an "Industrial Research Laboratory of Lighting", which for 38-years is a national scientific center with international popularity, with accreditation for testing and calibration and in which the first scientific staff in light techniques was created - 13 doctors, many associated professors and three full professors.
We will remember his active public and managerial activities as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Unions in Bulgaria, founder, Chairman and Honorary Chairman of the National Committee on Lighting.
Prof. Vassilev’s scientific works, published in world-famous magazines and presented at international symposia, are highly valued abroad. He is the author of over 200 publications and the majority of books and textbooks in the field of lighting in Bulgaria.
From 2006 to 2013 he was the head of the national team, participating in the European Adaptive Street Lighting Program.
In 2013 Prof. Nikolay Vassilev was recognized as one of the twelve world famous scientists in the field of lighting from the renowned magazine Svetotechnika, Russia.
